Ichabods outscore Wildcats in 2nd half of Big 12 exhibition game

Box Score MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabods trailed by as many as 19 late in the first half but outscored the Wildcats in the second half cutting the lead back to 11 in the second half in a 73-58 exhibition loss at Kansas State on Friday night. Washburn wraps up its exhibition schedule with its final Big 12 opponent at Oklahoma on Tuesday.

Washburn led for the first 2:59 of the game as Cameron Wiggins staked Washburn to the early lead as the Ichabods scored on their first possession of the game.

Washburn held a 7-4 lead before the Wildcats would go on to build a 12-point lead with 10:58 to go after a 16-7 run. Washburn cut the lead back to seven with under nine minutes left in the frame at 26-19 but a 20 to 7 run to end the half sent the teams to the locker room with KSU holding a 46-27 lead.

Washburn was limited to 36 percent shooting in the first stanza while the Wildcats were 57 percent from the field hitting 17 of 30 shots.

Coming out of the gates in the second half, the Ichabods used a 17 to 9 run of their own cutting the Wildcat lead to 11 with 11:35 to play at 55-44. 

Washburn kept the Wildcats within 16 points and trailed by 10 at 68-58 with 1:09 to play after a 3-pointer by Tom Huppe, but KSU scored the final five points including a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the 15-point win.

Isaac Clark led the Ichabods with 15 points off the bench hitting 6 of 9 shots from the field while David Salach had 13 points. Brady Skeens had seven points and seven rebounds adding two blocks, two steals and two assists. Randall Smith scored four points with six assists.

Wesley Iwundu scored 21 points adding 11 rebounds to lead the Wildcats.

Washburn held the Wildcats to 7 of 22 shooting in the second half for a 32 percent average including a 1 of 7 performance from 3-point range. KSU had a 40 to 31 advantage on the glass with Washburn picking up 10 offensive rebounds compared to nine for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats coughed up the ball 21 times leading to 13 points for Washburn and Washburn had 10 fast break points compared to six for KSU.
