Charles “Chick” Gordon - Men’s Basketball (1947-51) and Baseball (1948-51)
Sharp-shooting left-hander Charles Gordon played guard on the Ichabods basketball team from 1947-51 and also played on the baseball team from 1948-51. He was inducted into the Washburn Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991.

Playing for coach Adrian Miller, he helped WU to a hoops championship in the Central Intercollegiate Conference in 1950-51 as the team went 16-9 his senior year. Overall he helped the Ichabods to four winning seasons and to a 56-35 record.

Miller described Gordon by saying he “wasn’t real fast, but he wasn’t real slow.” He dominantly used his left hand and may as well have kept his right hand in his pocket, except on defense, where teammates said he used both hands and usually got half of the rebounds.

Teammate Dick McConnell said Gordon “was so dependable. He probably shot close to 60 percent because of his shot selection. He was a good rebounder and a good student.”

Gordon was a Topeka native and after graduating he taught at area schools before moving to Florida.
