Clayton “Tommy” Davis - Basketball (1925-29) and Track and Field (1928-29)
Described as a speedster with an eye for the basket, Clayton Davis helped lead the Ichabod basketball teams to some of their most successful seasons in school history while playing from 1925-29. He was inducted into the Washburn Athletic Hall of Fame in 1985-86.

In 1928-29, Davis’ senior year and the first year the team played in the $200,000 Whiting Fieldhouse, he helped the Ichabods to a 12-5 record and a Central Intercollegiate Conference championship. The team started out the year with victories against rivals Kansas, Wichita State and Fort Hays State.

The Washburn Review described Davis as “a world of speed and experience with a basket eye that has sent more than one Washburn opponent home on the short end of the score. He has an uncanny ability at tossing a pigskin through a small hoop.”

In four years with WU, he helped the team to a 45-18-1 record.

Davis earned all-CIC honors his senior year. He also lettered on the track and field team his final two years, participating in the 100-yard dash, the quarter-mile and the half-mile runs.

After graduating with a law degree in 1929, Davis practiced law in Wichita, Kansas, before moving back to Topeka. He served on the WU Board of Regents from 1943-55 and also as president of the Washburn Law School Association.
