Dennis Payne III - Golf and Men's Basketball (1964-67)
Ichabod golfer and basketball player Dennis Payne III attended Washburn from 1964-67 and was inducted into the WU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990-91.
Playing in packed Whiting Fieldhouse his senior year in 1966-67, Payne helped Washburn to a 15-6 record and a Central Intercollegiate Conference championship. Early in the year fans packed Whiting for a game with Southwest Missouri State (Missouri State). The Bears were ranked No. 1 in the nation and were leading by 16 with 10 minutes left. The Ichabods clawed back and with two seconds remaining and the score tied, Payne launched a jumper that won the game 79-77.
He led the team in scoring and was second in the CIC, earning him all-conference, all-district and honorable mention Little All-America honors.
Payne also lettered in golf for four years at WU and after graduating he was runner-up in the Kansas State Amateur Golf tournament in 1969 and Topeka city champion in 1986.
