Holm came to Washburn as an assistant football coach in 1929 and was the Washburn men’s basketball head coach from 1934 until 1936. Elmer took on the roll as the university’s athletic director in 1935 and in 1936, became the 21st head football coach for Washburn. He held that position for six seasons, from 1936 until 1941. His overall coaching record at Washburn was 23 wins, 31 losses, and 3 ties. This ranks him seventh at Washburn in terms of total wins and 23rd at Washburn in terms of winning percentage. Following his career at Washburn, Holm spent the 1942 season as an assistant coach at Nebraska University.
