Ernest Bearg - Football (1918-19; 1929-35)
Elmer Ernest (Ernie) Bearg first came to Washburn in 1910 from his native home in Severance when he enrolled in the Academy. He blazed a brilliant four year career on the gridiron winning all-state recognition. He also lettered in track and basketball.
Bearg began coaching early, tutoring the freshman while competing at Washburn and following graduation he was named the head coach of the Ichabods in 1918 and compiled a highly successful record of 11-2-1 over the course of two seasons.
Bearg entered Harvard University graduate school in 1919 but was soon chosen for the coaching staff at the University of Illinois. In 1925 he was appointed head coach at the University of Nebraska.
Washburn soon lured Bearg from Nebraska in 1929 and he coached the Ichabods until 1935. Leading the Ichabods, he finished with an overall record of 46-32-2 in nine seasons. That period of time became known as “The Bearg Era.” He was inducted into the Washburn Hall of Fame in 1973.
