Glen Cafer - Men’s Basketball Coach (1967-79), Athletic Director (1979-1982), Women’s Basketball Assistant Coach (1983-96), Golf Coach (1983-92)
Legendary basketball and golf coach Glen Cafer was inducted into the Washburn Athletic Hall of Fame in 1987 after a long career serving Washburn as a coach and administrator.
Cafer spent 11 years in Whiting Auditorium as the Ichabods basketball coach, amassing a record of 172-145 (.542) from 1967-79. In his first year he won the Central States Intercollegiate Conference championship and advanced to the NAIA national tournament. The following year he went back to the tournament and beat No. 1 Fairmount State, 74-72 in the second round in Kansas City, Mo. He won another conference title in 1973-74.
Cafer coached All-Americans and WU Hall of Fame members Ron Berkholtz and Davey Lopes during his career.
Cafer turned over his duties to assistant coach Bob Chipman and took over as athletic director in 1979. He held that post for four years and then became head golf coach and assistant women’s basketball coach in 1983. He stayed with the Lady Blues until 1996, helping Hall of Fame coach Patty Dick to six conference titles, including their first MIAA championship.
As golf coach he won six district titles and appeared in seven national tournaments.
Cafer began his college playing career at Moberly Junior College where he helped the team to a 50-8 record in two years. He then received his bachelor’s and master’s degree from Northeast Missouri State (Truman) and went on to coach 11 years of high school and college ball before coming to Washburn. During that time he was an assistant at Missouri.
Cafer’s 172 wins was the most at WU until Chipman, his successor, passed that total in 1986-87.
