Greg “Buzz” Wilson - Basketball (1986-89)
Former National Champion Greg Wilson played basketball for the Ichabods from 1986-89 and was inducted into the Washburn Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006-07.
In 1986-87, he averaged 9.1 points a game as the Ichabods won the NAIA national championship. Led by Hall of Fame coach Bob Chipman, the Ichabods went 35-4, won the Central States Intercollegiate Conference championship and ended the year on a 22-game winning streak, including the five games of the NAIA National Tournament played in Kansas City, Mo., in Kemper Arena. Washburn defeated West Virginia State, 79-77 in the National Championship game on March 17, 1987. The Ichabods were up 76-66 with just over two minutes remaining and then held off a late run by West Virginia State.
Wilson finished his career with 1,321 points and 569 rebounds, then the fourth highest totals in school history. He played in 135 games at WU, which was the second most, and his 39 starts his first year tied a school record.
As of the 2019-20 season, Wilson ranked 10th all-time in scoring and 10th in rebounding. He is tied for eighth with 514 field goals made and seventh with 1,106 attempts.
Wilson earned first team all-Central States Intercollegiate Conference honors in 1987-88.
