J.P. Wright - Baseball (1986-88)
All-American J.P. Wright played baseball at Washburn from 1986-88 and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998-99.

Wright solidified his name at the top of the Ichabods' record books with his .450 career batting average and 64 home runs. Those records have stood far above the rest through the 2020 season.

In 1987 Wright set school records with 26 home runs, 78 runs scored and 83 RBI. Those records also still stand.

Wright’s final year, 1988, was perhaps one of the finest for an Ichabods baseball player. He batted a school-record .483 and was named an All-American and the NAIA national player of the year. He set school records with 20 doubles and 84 hits in a single season, and those two records were still in the top-three of the record book through 2020.

For his career Wright is the school’s leader with 197 runs scored and 228 RBI. His total of 226 hits stood until 2006.

The Minnesota Twins drafted him in the 25th round of the 1988 Major League Baseball Draft and he played in the minor leagues.

Wright was selected to try out for Team USA in the 1988 Olympic Games as the only NAIA Division II player.
