Pete Goering - Meritorious Service
Pete Goering was posthumously honored for his contribution to Washburn athletics and was inducted into the Washburn Hall of Fame in 2010. Goering served as sports editor and executive editor of the Topeka Capital-Journal for nearly 40 years and often mention Washburn in his columns. As a Capital-Journal sportswriter, he covered many of the major events in Kansas sports history. He covered The University of Kansas in five Final Fours, including the 1988 National Championship win, and the Summer Olympics twice. He covered the Kansas City Chiefs' victory in Super Bowl IV as a photography intern and staffed the Royals' two World Series appearances.

Goering was selected by his peers as Kansas Sportswriter of the Year five times in a period from 1976 through 1994. Goering also was a member of the Ichabod Scholarship Fund and a media member of the Washburn Athletics Hall of Fame Committee.

He passed away on Feb. 7, 2009 and is survived by his wife Diane and daughters Deb, Elizabeth and son Brett.
