Robert Denson began his collegiate career at Washburn University after several years in the military and a brief stint at Kansas State University. While at Washburn, Denson played football and was a member of the track and field team. He was conference champion in the Javelin event in 1958, '59, and '60, each year establishing a new meet record. He also competed in the National NAIA Track and Field Championship and won the gold medal in Javelin in 1959 and 1960.

In 1966, he was inducted into the NAIA Track and Field Hall of Fame, before becoming CEO and owner of Scott Insurance Agency in Emporia. He has been involved in several service and fraternal organizations, and has served as a deacon and trustee at his church, as well as working as President of Eastgate Plaza, Inc., a non-profit housing project, for almost 40 years. He was also inducted into the WU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1976 and was listed as an Outstanding Young Man in the United States by the JayCees in 1966.
