Tom Meier Basketball - (1983-87)
Few players can claim All-American and national champion as rewards of their college basketball careers, but when Tom Meier played for the Ichabods from 1983-87 he earned two All-America awards and finished his career with the NAIA national title. He was inducted into the Washburn Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996-97.

The 6-6 forward began his career relatively modestly as he scored 283 points his freshman year to average 12.3 a game. He also pulled in 8.7 rebounds that year. A year later he scored 490 points and then he finished his career scoring over 600 points in each of his final two years.

Meier led Washburn in scoring those two years and garnered All-America honors. His junior year he earned honorable mention and then after his senior year he was named first team NAIA All-America. He was also named District 10 MVP that year.

Meier’s career ended at the highest level as the Ichabods won the 1986-87 NAIA national championship his senior year.  Led by Hall of Fame coach Bob Chipman who was then in his eighth year, the Ichabods went 35-4, won the Central States Intercollegiate Conference championship and ended the year on a 22-game winning streak, including the five games of the NAIA national tournament played in Kansas City, Mo., in Kemper Arena. Washburn defeated West Virginia State, 79-77 in the national championship game on March 17, 1987. The Ichabods were up 76-66 with just over two minutes remaining and then held off a late run by West Virginia State.

When Meier finished his four years at Washburn he had 2,082 points and 1,155 rebounds, both the second highest totals in school history. He joined teammate Gary Carrier as the only Ichabods to score 2,000 points with 1,000 rebounds and he became the first to add 200 assists as well.

He averaged 16.4 points per game and held the school record with a .644 career field goal percentage. He shot .670 his junior year to top the school record he set two years before. His 367 made free throws was third best in school history.

Along with his All-America honors, Meier was named all-district and all-Central States Intercollegiate Conference twice.
