Background: As a freshman at Dakota State, Powell averaged 7.5 minutes per game, scoring 3.3 points and grabbing 1.3 rebounds per game... In one game against Oglala Lakota, had a stat-line of 16 points, six rebounds and two assists... At Washburn High in Minneapolis, earned four letters in track and field and three in basketball... As a sophomore, was the sixth man on a Millers' team that won the conference title... As a junior, averaged 15 points per game in his first year as a starter, and in track, won first place in the city for the high jump, long jump and triple jump... As a senior, averaged 20 points per game, making the All-City Conference Team and played in the Inner City All Star Classic... The Millers went 20-8 on the season, making it to the Section Championship game.
