Washburn Hall of Fame - Mike Atkins

Mike Atkins
Football 1977-80
Inducted 1997-98

In four years at Washburn Mike Atkins cemented his name near or at the top of the Ichabod football passing record book. He played under center for WU from 1977-80 and was inducted into the Washburn Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997-98.

Atkins led the Ichabods in passing each of his last three years and in his senior year he threw for 2,106 yards, a school record that stood for eight years. When he ended his career he was the school’s all-time leader in passing yards with 5,437 and completions with 442. His yardage record stood until 1996 and his completion record was still at the top through the 2006 season.

His 418 passing yards on October 27, 1979 at Missouri Western set a school record and made him the first Ichabod to throw for 400 yards or more in a single game.

Atkins ended his career with the school’s single-game, single-season and career records for attempts and completions and he finished with a 51 percent completion percentage, making him the first Ichabod quarterback to throw at better than 50 percent for a career.

In his career Atkins threw for 31 touchdowns, becoming the second WU quarterback to pass for more than 30 touchdowns. He finished with 5,063 total offensive yards, setting a school record that wasn’t broke until 1996.
