Ian Trebilcock – Senior – Business

When did you start playing golf?
IT: Pretty much ever since I could walk and swing a club. When I was a toddler, my parents got me some plastic golf clubs and I was hitting those in the house. I finally got real golf clubs when I started breaking things in the house, so they moved me outside. My dad pretty much taught me the basics. The story he likes to tell people is that the way he taught me was to not imitate his golf swing.

How did you end up at Washburn?
IT: I came to Washburn because they were one of my offers out of high school. I came up for a visit and I just loved it. I already knew a lot of the guys on the team because of high school golf and summer golf so I felt pretty comfortable coming here and I’m glad I did!

What has been the most exciting moment in your career at Washburn?
IT: When we won at Mule Invitational in 2018. That was our first win as a team that I’ve been a part of at Washburn. It was cool because it was a really good field and a lot of the top schools in our region were there. We knew we were good but that just kind of proved it to us, so that was pretty special.

What do you plan on pursuing with your career?
IT: One of my dreams is owning a golf teaching academy, where I help kids learn how to play golf and introduce them to a game. I wouldn’t mind being a teaching pro or something like that. I’d like to do something in the golf industry.

What’s your favorite quote?
IT: I don’t where I got it but it’s just stuck with me. “Anything worth doing is overdoing.” Just meaning that if you’re putting your time into doing something, you might as well give it everything you have and do it as best as you can.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
IT: I’ve always been fascinated with Australia. I’ve always wanted to go Steve Irwin’s zoo. I always remember watching him growing up on Animal Planet. I’ve always been into going to zoos so Steve Irwin’s zoo is the biggest thing for me.

What is your go-to karaoke song?
IT: Probably Dixieland Delight by Alabama. That’s a good one to sing because everyone knows it so you don’t feel alone up there because everyone is singing along.

Anything else you’d like to add?
IT: If you want to come support us, we have home tournaments at the Topeka Country Club, less than a mile from campus. We only get one home tournament a year so it’d be great to see people come support us!
