When did you start playing tennis?
SC: I started playing tennis when I was six or seven years old, so it’s been a while. My mom was always playing tennis. She brought me to the country clubs and I learned through there. I had a club coach that helped me learn the basics for a couple years and then he transferred me to bigger clubs and that’s how I learned more about tennis.
What has been your most exciting moment in your career at Washburn?
SC: It was when we beat University of Central Oklahoma two years ago. We had a really good team my freshman year. We didn’t expect to win against UCO because we had always lost to them before. That was also the main event to win conference that year.
Throughout your tennis career, who has influenced you the most?
SC: My second coach, Leif Martens, who has known me since I was eight years old. He’s still my coach from back home. He’s kind of been a second dad to me. He’s always pushed me to be better on court but also as a person.
Since the fall season has been suspended, how have you been spending your extra time?
SC: I’ve been drawing a lot and painting. I’ve started learning more about myself by journaling and reading. Learning more about what I can do to improve my life quality overall, other than just focusing on sports and academics. Since we’ve been back, with practice and school again, I still find some time to do those things and it really helps me to relax and get my mind off things.
If you had three wishes, what would you wish for?
SC: I love alpacas so I’d definitely want to own an alpaca as a pet- that would be my first wish. Then, I would wish for health for myself and my family. Lastly, that I always find happiness in what I’m doing.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
SC: I would go to Sweden. I love Scandinavia and Sweden in general. I’ve been there only two times but I love the culture and the food. It’s my favorite country I’ve been to, so far. I’d love to go back and see more places and stay there a little longer.
Anything else you’d like to add?
SC: A lot of people think tennis is really boring to watch, especially what you see on TV. College tennis is really different. There’s a lot more yelling and noises and it’s a lot more intense. I encourage people to come watch because we have a lot of fun matches!
