Michael Majors – Senior – Secondary Education

How did you end up at Washburn?
MM: Funny story… I was here on my football visit and I was on my way to a meeting with [head football coach Craig] Schurig the next morning and then I bumped into [head track & field coach Cameron] Babb in the hallway. He asked me if I did track and told me to come talk to him after I was done talking to Schurig. I ended up texting Babb for a little while after that. Then, I decided to do track instead of football. It just felt like the better, healthier option.

Did you play other sports growing up? How did playing those sports help you develop your game?
MM: I played football and wrestling. Being a multisport athlete helps you become a more well-rounded athlete. Playing football growing up teaches you the team atmosphere and the work ethic. Wrestling is such an intense, full body season that it helps build your physical toughness and mental toughness. When it comes to impacting track, track in college is a nine- or 10-month season so you have to be mentally tough and ready to stick it out for the long haul.

What has been your most exciting moment in your career at Washburn?
MM: Indoor conference last year. Indoor conference is intense because all the teams in the conference are packed in and it’s super loud. I ended up getting sixth and set a personal record, which was also a school record. It was a really great atmosphere. It’s definitely something I’ll never forget.

What do you plan on doing with your degree?
MM: My degree is in secondary education. I’ll graduate in the spring with my bachelor’s and then I have another year of eligibility. After I graduate in the spring, I’ll just go straight into getting my master’s since I’ll still be here and have the time. I’ll probably get my master’s in educational administration and try to make my way up to an athletic director.

Since COVID has put a hold on a lot of things, how have you been spending your extra time?
MM: I’ve been working out as much as I can. I’m a big outdoorsman so I spend a lot of time working on my family’s farm. I also like to go fishing and hunting in my free time.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
MM: A place on my bucket list is Glacier National Park up in Montana. I love the mountains and love being outside and I think that park is the coolest one to visit.

What’s your favorite quote?
MM: Something my grandpa always told me was “Work hard while nobody’s looking.” Everyone works hard when the coaches and fans and everyone else is watching, but the real winners are made when nobody is watching.
