Madison Johnson – Junior – Marketing

When did you start playing volleyball? How did you get into that?
MJ: I started playing volleyball from a young age because I wanted to follow in my mom’s footsteps. The main sport she played growing up was volleyball. I was on a YMCA volleyball team all throughout elementary school. When I was 11 years old, I started on my first club volleyball team. It is kind of cool because the club she played for growing up, that’s also the same club that I started at.

How do you typically prepare before a game?
MJ: I typically prepare for a game by being with my teammates! Usually we will grab some food to fuel our bodies for our game. When we are back in the locker room, we listen to music together!

What has been your most exciting moment at Washburn?
MJ: I would have to say when my team made it to the Elite Eight/Final Four in Pittsburgh when I was a sophomore. It was an amazing experience. We were able to do some volunteer work with a local elementary school and sponsored a “Make-A-Wish” child. It is one of those experiences that makes me look back and smile.

Since COVID suspended the fall season, how have you been spending your extra time?
MJ: I have been working more! I am an intern at Advisors Excel, so I have been able to get in a few more hours than usual! I also have still been spending time with my team. We have continued to practice and workout together throughout the week. So I have been able to get to know my teammates even more! Next year, I am wanting to pursue my MBA while playing an additional year of volleyball.

You’re majoring in business. What do you plan on doing with your degree or career?
MJ: My dream job has been to working in the Marketing Department for a major sports team, like the Royals or Chiefs. However, I am also interested in doing something marketing related in general that is not related to sports. I am going to explore the option of owning my own business one day as well.

Do you have any hidden talents?
MJ: I don’t really know if this is classified as a hidden talent, but I enjoy learning how to write in different fonts.

If you could own any animal as a pet, what would it be?
MJ: A penguin. I think they are super cute when they waddle around!

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
MJ: I would want to go to the Swiss Alps! I have seen many pictures and it is beautiful. In the mountains, there are so many activities available to do to keep busy and to get exercise!

What interesting hobbies or interests do you have?
MJ: I love cooking and baking new recipes that I find on Pinterest. I also enjoy reading in my free time. I love watching sports. I am a huge Nebraska fan, so I am excited for their football team to begin to play some games this fall!
