LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabods fel l in their season opener 92-60 to the No. 4 ranked Kansas Jayhawks. Washburn will continue their road swing as they play their second and third games in the next two days at the Hillyard Classic in St. Joseph, Mo.
The Ichabods led at 4-3, 6-5, 9-8 and 11-10 with 11:42 in the first half before Kansas used a 24-5 run over the next seven plus minutes en route to a 34-18 halftime lead. In the first half, Washburn was limited to 7 of 33 from the field while Kansas was 12 of 26. Kansas also led the Ichabods from the free throw line hitting 8 of 16 compared to 1 of 2 for the Ichabods.
In the second half, Washburn heated up to 15 of 28 from the field for a 54 percent average. Kansas would increase the lead to as many as 34 with 2:23 to go in the game behind 57 percent shooting from the field.
Angel Santiago scored all 11 of his points in the second half hitting 4 of 6 from the field including going 3 of 5 from 3-point land.
James Williams also scored 11 in the game to tie for team high honors.
Mario Scott also scored in double digits scoring 10 points.
Kyle Snyder and
Brady Sisk each had eight rebounds.
Kansas was led by Darrell Arthur who scored 14 points leading four Jayhawks in double figures.
