ST. LOUIS, MO – The No. 3 Washburn Lady Blues jumped out to a 32-13 first half lead and never looked back as they defeated Missouri-St. Louis 73-55 in Mark Twain Field House. Washburn will be back in action on Saturday at No. 12 Drury in Springfield, Mo., with a 5:30 p.m. tip.
The Tritons did not its second field goal of the game until the 17:57 mark of the second half but would go on a 17-10 run over the first 9:26 of the second half to cut the Washburn lead to 52-31. After a Lady Blues' timeout, Amanda Holmes converted a traditional 3-point play to increase the lead to 55-31. The Tritons would hit a 3-pointer and a lay-up sandwiching a Janice Bright field goal producing a 57-36 score.
Following the media timeout with 9:18 left in the game, a 9-4 run by the Tritons cut the lead to 61-45 with 5:56 to go in the game. After a time out by Missouri-St. Louis, the teams traded baskets leading up to a media time out with 4:55 to go. Washburn would outscore the Tritons 10-8 the remainder of the way leading to the 18-point win.
Washburn held the Tritons to one field goal in the first half of the game as they were 1 of 21 from the field including 0 of 8 from 3-point range. The Tritons did hit 12 of 16 free throw attempts. Washburn hit 13 of 18 free throw attempt as the teams combined for 27 first half fouls. All 14 Lady Blues saw action in the first half and 12 of 14 scored led by Corkey Stiger and Karla Tailele who each scored nine points.
Stiger led the Lady Blues with 17 points. Also in double figures was Amanda Holmes ith 15 points and Janice Bright had 10 points.
