TOPEKA, Kan. – The No. 17 ranked Washburn Lady Blues soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to the Rockhurst University Hawks in their season opener in Yager Stadium. The Lady Blues (0-2-1) will be back in action this weekend in Weatherford, Okla., where they will take on Southwestern Oklahoma on Friday and West Texas A&M on Sunday before opening MIAA play at Emporia State on Sept. 8.
After a scoreless first half in which Washburn outshot the Hawks 5 to 2, the lady Blues got on the board first when junior
Jessica Mainz recorded her first goal of the season in the 53rd minute off a cross from
Manon Englehardt putting Washburn up 1-0. The lead was short-lived as Rockhurst's Abbya Davidson scored the equalizer 65 seconds later to knot the score at one each. Davidson's goal came on an assist from Sarah Anderson, who placed a shot off the crossbar back to Davidson for the goal.
In the 63rd minute, Rockhurst scored the winner on Anderson's first goal of the season off an assist from Katie Vogt.
From that point on, the Lady Blues outshot the Hawks 6 to 0, but could not connect as time expired.
For the match, Washburn attempted 15 shots, compared to seven for Rockhurst. However, the Hawks placed five of its shots on goal, two more than the Lady Blues attempted.
It was a physical match as well as the teams were whistled for a combined 34 fouls, with 20 going against the Lady Blues.
