TOPEKA, Kan. -- The No. 9 Washburn Lady Blues got offensive and
Jessica Mainz recorded her second hat trick in the last three games as the Lady Blues blasted Missouri Western 7-1. The seven goals is a new school record for the Lady Blues. Washburn will be back in action on Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. as they will take on Truman on the road and follow that with a match against Northwest Missouri the following afternoon.
Washburn (4-3-1, 2-1-0 MIAA) took a 2-1 lead into the half as
Danielle Ayala scored on an assist in the seventh minute off an assist from Mainz to put Washburn up 1-0 and Kelley Lambeth scored her second goal of the season in the 25th minute on a double-touch assist from
Ashley Taylor and
Ashley Hynek. Two minutes and three seconds later, the Griffons' (2-6-0, 1-2-0 MIAA) Meigan Soo scored her fourth goal of the season off an assist from Michelle Polk.
The Lady Blues outshot the Griffons 13 to 1 in the first half.
In the second half it was all Washburn as the Lady Blues scored five unanswered goals in the final 23:02 of the match en route to a new school record for goals in a match with seven.
The scoring started in the 66th minute as
Lisa Fahey scored her third goal of the season off a corner kick from
Ashley Taylor.
Mainz added what would be the first of her three goals on the evening unassisted on a free kick that bent into the left corner in the 79th minute.
Manon Englehardt scored her third goal of the season after driving the left side and scoring from 10 yards out in the 81st minute.
Mainz recorded her second goal on a double-pass assist from
Brie Forman and Taylor in the 85th minute.
Mainz wrapped up the scoring in the 87th minute on a cross from Englehardt.
Ashley Klone picked up the win in goal for the Lady Blues.
Washburn outshot the Griffons for the match 29 to 2, including a 16 to 1 advantage in the second half.
