Lady Blues fall in NCAA opener

EMPORIA - The Lady Blues had their season ended in a 25-18, 25-21, 25-15 loss against No. 12 Central Missouri Friday in the first round of the NCAA South Central Region tournament. No. 10 Washburn's season ended at 30-6 for the third 30-win season since becoming an NCAA school in 1989.

The Lady Blues, making their fifth straight NCAA tournament appearance and sixth in seven years, his just .105 while the Jennies had a .239 attack percentage. Courtney Wallman led the team in kills for the first time all year with seven and she had a season-high 27 attacks. Four players had six kills, including Monica Miesner and Stephanie Nitz, whose career ended. Nitz and Carolyn Raynes finished 130-19 in their four years and the Lady Blues have gone 157-26 in the five years Miesner has been part of the team.

Miesner ended her career third with 1,510 kills, second with 1,857 digs and third with 1,823.0 points in Washburn history. Nitz ended 12 in career blocks with 357.

Molly Smith led WU with 17 digs while Ashley Shepard had 14 and Kate Hampson had 13. Hampson had 29 assists and will go into her senior year as the school's leader with 4,448 assists.
