Washburn out-shot Central Missouri 9-5 in the second half but could never equalize a first-half goal from the Jennies as they defeated the Lady Blues 1-0 Saturday at Yager Stadium in WU's home and MIAA opener. The Lady Blues will stay at home and host Truman Thursday at 7 p.m.
UCM goalkeeper Lauren Bamvakais stopped five Washburn shots on goal, including a penalty kick from
Jessica Mainz in the 29th minute of the first half that would have tied the game.
At 14:58 UCM's Melanie Hall scored unassisted as she dribbled the ball up the middle and fired it in from 20 yards out.
The penalty kick was the Lady Blues' only shot on goal in the first half. They put four on in the second half but never found the back of the net.
UCM won the overall shot battle 13-12 and Washburn held a 7-5 advantage on corner kicks.

Angela Wiseman each had two shots and one on goal. Hall led UCM with four shots.
