Lady Blues blank Missouri Western 4-0 for 1st MIAA win of the season

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team tossed a shutout in a 4-0 win over Missouri Western at Yager Stadium. With the win, Washburn improves to 4-3-1 and 1-2-0 in MIAA action. The Griffons fell to 1-6-1 and 0-4-0 in conference play. Washburn will be back in action on Sept. 25 in Warrensburg as they face Central Missouri at 7 p.m. in a rematch of a Sept. 13 contest in which the Lady Blues fell 1-0.

The Lady Blues led from start to finish as Lauren Henry scored her third goal of the season on an assist from Ashley Taylor from 10 yards out in the 29th minute of play. It would be the only goal of the half as the Lady Blues took a 1-0 lead at the break. Washburn outshot the Griffons 16 to 1 in the first 45 minutes of play.

In the second half, Traci Nigg put Washburn up 2-0 with her first goal of the season from 15 yards out in the 60th minute on pass from Henry.

Washburn went up 3-0 as Jessica Mainz scored her third goal of the season and the first of two goals of the evening as she followed in a rebound off a Manon Englehardt shot which popped up in front of the net off the top of the crossbar in the 64th minute. Mainz's second goal came 11:59 later as she scored off a pass from Nicole Tomes.

Jenny Persons picked up her second win in goal with the shutout collecting one save facing three total shots.

Washburn outshot the Griffons 26 to 3 in the match. Washburn also held a 4 to 0 advantage in corner kicks.
