ST. LOUIS - The Lady Blues had four players reach double figures in kills and five reached double figures in digs as they beat Missouri-St. Louis 3-1 (25-21, 25-14, 21-25, 25-20) in their first match Saturday at the UMSL Invitational. No. 2 Washburn will play Quincy at 2 p.m. to wrap up the weekend.
Monica Miesner and
Ashley Shepard had double-doubles. Miesner had 11 kills and 15 digs and Shepard had 10 of each.
Breanna Lewis led the team with 12 kills and
Molly Smith led a busy back row with 16 digs.
Washburn had 11 blocks while the Tritons had 10. The two combined for 147 digs and 107 kills.
Kate Hampson had 45 of Washburn's 51 assists.
In the second set the Lady Blues were up 24-13 and looking to close it out. Courtney Wallman served set point and the ball went over the net 16 times before the Tritons won the long rally on a kill. An UMSL service error then gave Washburn the win.
UMSL hit .070 and .071 in the first two sets but hit .333 in the third set to make the match score 3-1.
The fourth match was played closely as UMSL tied the score at 7-7 and 14-14. WU had a 10-3 lead to go up 24-17 and then after an UMSL 3-0 run Shepard closed out the match with a kill.
Notes
- Washburn improved to 4-9 against UMSL and has won the last three.
- Ashley Shepard had her first career double-double and her first career double-figure dig match. She also had her 15th career double-figure kill match.
