TOPEKA, Kan. -- The ninth-ranked Washburn Lady Blues volleyball team kicked off play in the 2009 Holiday Inn/Lady Blues Fall Classic with a pair of 3-1 wins on Friday. Washburn beat Southeastern Oklahoma State 3-1 (25-22, 25-14, 23-25, 25-18) and No. 6 ranked West Texas A&M 3-1 (25-16, 19-25, 25-19, 25-22).
Sophomore middle hitter
Mollie Lacy led three Lady Blues with double-figure kills by tying a career-high with 18 kills. Freshman outside hitter
Hillary Hughes tied her career-high with 16 kills and sophomore rightside hitter
Breanna Lewis had a career-high 15 kills.
Senior setter
Kate Hampson dished out 52 assists and added 12 digs for her 44th career double-double.
Junior middle hitter and
Kelci Wigger and Hughes led WU with 11 kills apiece in game two. The 11 kills was a career-high for Wigger. Junior outside hitter
Ashley Shepard and Lacy each added 10 kills for Washburn. Hampson added 51 assists and nine digs. Junior libero
Molly Smith had a team-high 20 digs as the Lady Blues upset the sixth-ranked Lady Buffs.
Washburn will finish up the two-day event on Saturday with a 1 p.m. match against Tarleton State and a 5 p.m. match with Angelo State.
