TOPEKA, Kan. -- The ninth-ranked Washburn volleyball team downed Northwest Missouri State 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-15, 25-19) on PINK OUT Tuesday at Lee Arena. The Lady Blues warmed up in pink t-shirts and raised money in support of breast cancer awareness.
The Lady Blues (24-3, 8-3 MIAA) cruised to an easy set one win 25-16 behind seven kills from freshman
Jessica Fey. Washburn hit .588 as a team in the first set.
The Bearcats (11-16, 2-9 MIAA) rebounded to take set two 25-22, a set in which the Lady Blues hit just .065 and made 11 errors. The Lady Blues responded quickly with a 25-15 win in set three and then ended the match with a 25-19 win in set four.
Washburn hit .320 for the match and had 69 kills compared to 41 for Northwest Missouri. Senior
Kate Hampson led the Lady Blues with her ninth double-double of the season and 47th of her career with 54 assists and 14 digs. Junior
Ashley Shepard recorded her first double-double of the season with 13 kills and 10 digs, while freshman
Hillary Hughes added 11 kills and 11 digs for her fifth double-double of the year. Sophomore
Mollie Lacy tied Shepard with a team-high 13 kills and Fey finished with 10. Sophomore
Breanna Lewis came off the bench for 11 kills as well.
Washburn will return to action this weekend traveling to Kirksville, Mo. on Friday to battle No. 19-ranked Truman State and St. Joseph, Mo. on Saturday to square off with Missouri Western.
