Setting the scene . . .
The Washburn Ichabods will continue their five-game home stand to open the season as they will play host to the Saint Mary Spires from Leavenworth, Kan. The Spires are 5-1 this season coming off a 79-60 win over Haskell on Tuesday. The Ichabods opened the season with a 71-41 win over Peru State.

Bruce Steinbrock will be the play-by-play voice of the Ichabods and former WU quarterback Mark Elliott will be the color analyst.

Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach
Bob Chipman begins his 31st season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. For 24 years now Chipman has been the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 663-264 (.715) overall and he has 421 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. Chipman has never faced Saint Mary.
Saint Mary head coach Jon Martin is 24-12 in his second season on the Spires' bench. He is a 1995 graduate of Central Methodist. Bishop has been an assistant coach at Pratt Community College (Kan.), Missouri Western University, Angelo State University (Texas), Kansas Wesleyan University, Northwest Missouri State, Central Missouri State, and the Kansas Cagerz of the United States Basketball League. He received a master's degree from Northwest Missouri.
Last time out for the Ichabods . . .
TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods opened their 104th season of collegiate basketball with a 71-41 win over Peru State. Washburn will be back in action on Thursday when they will host Saint Mary at 7 p.m. in Lee Arena.
The Ichabods trailed only once at 7-6 as the Bobcat lead lasted 20 seconds before the Ichabods took the lead for good on a
Nate Daniels jumper and they never looked back building a lead as many as 15 in the opening stanza right before the halftime break. Washburn shot 43 percent in the first half hitting 15 of 35 shots from the field as 11 different Ichabods scored.
In the second half, Washburn came out of the locker room on a 27-4 run over the first 13 minutes of the half pushing the lead to 37 on two different occasions before wrapping up the 30-point win. Washburn held the Bobcats to 30 percent shooting in the second half as they hit 6 of 20 attempts from the field.
De'Andre Washington led the Ichabods with 17 points and eight rebounds. He was 8 of 13 from the field and also had four assists. He was the only Ichabod to reach double figure scoring, but five other Ichabods had at least six points in the game.
Steven Burks led the Bobcats with 10 points.
The Ichabods finished the game shooting 38 percent from the field connecting on 27 of 71 attempts while Peru State was limited to 16 of 51 shooting for a 31 percent clip. The Bobcats were 2 of 18 from 3-point range.
Washburn forced 30 Bobcat turnovers turning them into 27 points. Washburn also recorded 27 second chance points.
ABOUT Saint Mary . . .
The Spires are 5-1 after topping Haskell for the second time this season. After losing their first game of the season in a 64-60 loss to Graceland, Saint Mary has won their last five games. They are led by Eric Avent who is averaging 21 points per game along with a team-high 8.2 rebounds per game. The 6-5 guard scored 29 points against Baker on Nov. 6 on the heels of a 27-point performance in the opener at Graceland. He has hit 38 of 77 attempts from the field and 26 of 40 free throw attempts.

Nov. 17, 2009 - LAWRENCE, Kan. .-- The Spires defeated Haskell for the second time this season with a 79-60 win. Eric Avent led the Spires with 28 points on 10 of 17 shooting from the field while adding 11 rebounds. Jeb Greenberg had 15 points.

Ichabod Basketball History . . .
Washburn is 1,361-949 (.682 in 2309 games) in its 104th season of intercollegiate action. The Ichabods are the ninth-winningest team in NCAA Division II history and the 26th winningest team this decade. The Ichabods are 421-184 since joining the NCAA Division II ranks, which is the most since the 1989-90 season in the MIAA.
Ichabods In Lee Arena . . .
The Ichabods are 331-59 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena - the 26th season of play. The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena.
Tip Ins. . .
• With the win over the Bobcats, the Ichabods are 72-31-1 in their first game official game of the season. The last time the Ichabods lost their season lid-lifter was on Nov. 11, 2007 at Kansas when they fell 92-60 to the Jayhawks.
• All-time, the Ichabods are 25-1 with the lone loss coming on Nov. 16, 1990 when they lost to Friends 89-88 in the Lee Arena debut.

Washburn will then host Baker on Nov. 28 before opening MIAA play on Dec. 2 at Nebraska-Omaha.
