Washburn second half rally falls short at Northwest Missouri

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods shot 52 percent from the field in the second half coming up short for a seven-point halftime deficit but it was not enough as the Ichabods fell 81-73 at Northwest Missouri. The Ichabods will be back in action on Saturday when they will play host to Truman at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 12 in Lee Arena.

In the opening half, the Ichabods led by five at 22-17 with 7:25 to play in the period but the Bearcats went on an 18 to 6 run the remainder of the first half taking a 35-28 lead into the locker room.

The Bearcats stretched their lead to as many as nine in the opening minutes of the second half at 42-33 after a pair of free throws. The Ichabods cut into the Bearcat lead at 44-40 on a Logan Stutz fastbreak lay up with 15:08 to play in the game. The Bearcats went on a 8-0 run to go up by 12 at 52-40 with 12:52 remaining.

The Ichabods returned with a run of their own as Washburn cut the lead down to two at 58-56 with 9:31 on a William McNeill layup but the Ichabods would get no closer as the Bearcats would push the lead to as many as 12 in the second half.

McNeill led the Ichabods with a career high 21 on 9 of 11 shooting. He scored five points in the first half. De'Andre Washington scored 13 and Logan Stutz had 10.

Edriss Floyd had 20 to pace the Bearcat attack hitting 5 of 8 3-point attempts.

Washburn outshot the Bearcats in the game hitting 26 of 57 from the field while Northwest was 23 of 52. Northwest did hit 8 of 19 3-point attempts while Washburn was 3 of 13. The Ichabods also struggled at the free throw line going 18 of 29 while the host Bearcats were 27 of 34.

Washburn held a 40 to 32 advantage on the glass with 14 offensive rebounds leading to 16 second chance points for the Ichabods. The Ichabods committed a season-high 22 turnovers leading to 25 points for the Bearcats. The teams combined for 50 fouls with Northwest Missouri being called for 26.
