KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues tennis team fell 5-3 to Northwest Missouri in the finals of the MIAA Tennis Championships at Clayview Country Club.

Freshman Erika Leston claimed a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over freshman Annie Doole at No. 5 to break a 3-3 tie, then Veronica Castilla captured a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) win to wrap up the title over Alyssa Castillo.

Northwest lost the first doubles flight completed when Lady Blues Trang Le Nguyen and  Abbey Sharpe knocked off Lina Gomez and  Jordan Lipira at No. 1, 8-4. The No. 3 squad of Gomez and Allison Wulff evened things up with an 8-2 win over Doole and Amanda Gayer, then an 8-6 win at No. 2 by Castilla and junior Lisa Pendrak over Castillo and fershman Whitney Zitsch put the Bearcats in the lead.

The match was leveled at 2-2 with a 6-0, 6-1 win by Le Nguyen over Gomez at No. 1 singles, but Lipira's 6-1, 6-2 triumph against Zitsch put Northwest back in the lead. Washburn again had an answer to tie it again with a 6-1, 6-3 victory by Sharpe over Pendrak.
