TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods won their second straight game tying the Turnpike Tussle series for Washburn largest margin of victory in a 73-42 win over Emporia State. The 31-point win tied Ichabod wins during the 1951-52 season (69-38) and during the 1998-99 season (83-52). Washburn improves to 9-8, 3-7 in the MIAA and will next be in action on Jan. 23 when they play host to Nebraska-Omaha at 7:30 p.m. in Lee Arena.
The Ichabods jumped out to a lead as many as 26 in the first half as
De'Andre Washington hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer giving the Ichabods a 38-12 halftime cushion going into the locker room. The Ichabods held the Hornets to just 3 of 22 shooting from the field for a 14 percent average while the Ichabods were 12 of 22 for a 55 percent average. The Ichabods also hit 5 of 10 3-pointers while ESU was limited to 1 of 13. The Hornets did not hit double-digit points until the 2:12 mark of the opening half.
In the second half, the Ichabods pushed the lead to 36 on a 3-pointer by
Mitch Allen with 48 seconds left while cruising to the 31-point win.
Washburn was led by
De'Andre Washington who scored 14 of his 19 points in the first half while hitting 6 of 9 attempts from the field including 4 of 5 3-pointers. William McNeill also hit double figures scoring 17.
Logan Stutz came off the bench just missing a double double with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Dustin Andrews and Lamar Wilbern each had 10 to pace Emporia State (7-9, 3-6 MIAA).
The Ichabods finished 24 of 50 from the field and the Hornets were 13 of 47 from the field. Washburn also hit 13 of 25 3-point attempts and 12 of 16 shots from the free throw line.
