Ichabods knocked off by #11 Bearcats in road loss

BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods again pushed a top 25-ranked team to the limit before falling late in a 73-62 loss at No. 11 Southwest Baptist at the Meyer Sports Center. The Ichabods will return home after wrapping up its three-game road trip against all nationally-ranked teams returning home to face Missouri Southern on Saturday in Lee Arena at 7:30 p.m.

Washburn cut the lead to three on a Bobby Chipman's putback which pulled Washburn within three at 62-59, but SBU's Tristan Steele hit his second straight 3-pointer putting the Bearcats up 65-59 with 3:12 remaining.

Following a media timeout, the Ichabods' De'Andre Washington's jumper came up empty and the Ichabods' Maurice Colter was called for an offensive foul with just over two minutes left still trailing by six. The Bearcats turned it over on their next possession and Washburn missed their field goal attempt with 1:20 remaining.

After a pair of free throws with 1:13 to go by Matt Rogers, SBU increased the lead to 67-59 and the Ichabods would get no closer the rest of the way as SBU would hit 2 of 2 of their free throws wrapping up the win.

The Bearcats took an eight-point lead into the halftime break leading 36-28. The Ichabods outshot Southwest Baptist 40 percent to 35 percent hitting 12 of 30 attempts while SBU was 8 of 23 from the field. However the Bearcats were 16 of 17 from the free throw line compared to 4 of 8 from the charity stripe for Washburn. Washburn was cold from behind the 3-point line missing all 10 attempts while SBU was 4 of 12. The Ichabods were whistled for 13 fouls compared to eight for SBU.

The Ichabods were led by Washington who scored a game-high 22 points while pulling down a team-high eight rebounds. Virgil Philistin scored 13 off the bench hitting 3 of 5 3-point attempts in the game.

SBU's Stelle led the Bearcats with 21 points while hitting 5 of his team's 7 3-pointers. Rogers scored 18 points and Kurtis Koenig scored 14 with nine rebounds.

Washburn finished the game shooting 42 percent hitting 25 of 59 attempts while SBU was 21 of 48. SBU hit 7 of 23 3-point attempts while the Ichabods werew 2 of 20 from behind the arc. The Bearcats enjoyed a 24 of 25 performance from the free throw line while Washburn was 10 of 15. The win was the 38th in a row for SBU at home.
