TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues surrendered a late goal and fell 2-1 in a lightning delayted game to Missouri Western on Thursday night at Yager Stadium. The Lady Blues will be back on the pitch on Saturday night at home against Northwest Missouri State at 6 p.m.
The Lady Blues (3-7-3, 3-6-2 MIAA) struck first on a penalty kick from
Ashley Hynek in the fifth minute. The Griffons (2-7-5, 2-5-5 MIAA) tied the game in the 44th minute when Heather Schmiemeier put the ball in the back of the net with :02 remaining in the half. She was assisted on the goal by Mary Ohm. Just after the first half ended the game was delayed due to lightning in the area. The second half resumed after a 1:22 delay.
Missouri Western scored the game-winner with just over four minutes to play when Audrey Henderson took a pass from
Ashley Grunder and beat the keeper to put MWSU in front.
Ashley Klone made three saves in net for the Lady Blues, while Jenna Weis made four saves for Missouri Western.
