Washburn sweeps Southwest Baptist in volleyball action

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The No. 6-ranked Washburn Lady Blues rolled to a 3-0 win over Southwest Baptist taking the match 25-15, 25-11, 25-13 in Lee Arena on Friday night. Washburn will be back in action when they play host to Pittsburg State on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

The Lady Blues, who improved to 18-1 and 6-1 in the MIAA, took control of the first set after trailing 6-4 going on a 13-6 run pushing their lead to 19-10 on a service error by the Bearcats. Washburn would then wrap up the match with back-to-back kills by Jessica Kopp on assists by Abby Wittman.

In the second set it was all Washburn as the Lady Blues jumped out to a 9-2 lead and would stretch it to 15-4 on a kill by Kopp on an assist by Molly Smith. The Lady Blues took advantage of three straight attack errors by the Bearcats (6-12, 1-5 MIAA) at 22-9 to close out the set on a kill from Sami McHenry.

In the third set again Washburn cruised to an early 10-2 advantage keeping SBU at a distance in the final set of the match.

Hillary Hughes led the Lady Blues with 10 kills while Jessica Fey had nine and Aubri Renshaw and Breanna Lewis each had eight kills. Amanda Guess had 28 assists and Molly Smith recorded 19 digs. Hughes also had two solo blocks. The Lady Blues hit .386 in the match collecting 51 kills with 12 errors in 101 attacks. Washburn also had 62 points compared to 26 for the Bearcats.

Ashley Jurgensmeyer had seven kills to pace the Bearcats and Brianna Wallace had 19 assists.

Washburn held SBU to a .071 hitting percentage as the Bearcats collected 21 kills with 14 errors in 99 swings.
