BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The sixth-ranked Lady Blues made quick work of Southwest Baptist in a 3-0 sweep on Friday night in Bolivar. Washburn won 25-11, 25-16, 25-16. The Lady Blues are back in action on Saturday night at 6 p.m. at Pittsburg State.
Washburn (27-2, 15-2 MIAA) scored the first five points of the first set and never looked back. A short rally by The Bearcats (9-19, 4-12 MIAA) cut the lead to four at 14-10, but a 7-0 run by the Lady Blues put the set away as they rolled to the 25-11 win.
The second set saw Southwest Baptist take an early lead thanks a 7-1 run, but a 5-1 run by the Lady Blues knotted things at 9-9. The set went back-and-forth for a few points before Washburn took the lead for good at 13-12. WU extended the lead to as many as nine as they won set two 25-16.
The third set was another back-and-forth affair with neither team able to lead by more than a point in the early going. With the set tied at 5-all Washburn went on a 7-1 run to grab a six-point advantage at 12-6. The lead grew to as many as eight before a quick run by the Bearcats cut the deficit in half at 17-13. The Lady Blues pushed the lead to nine and closed out the set and the match at 25-16.
Breanna Lewis led Washburn with nine kills and no errors, while
Mollie Lacy added eight kills.
Hillary Hughes and
Jessica Fey had seven apiece.
Amanda Guess recorded her 13th double-double of the season with 18 assists and 11 digs, while
Abby Wittman chipped in 15 assists.
Ashley Jurgensmeyer led SBU with a match-high 10 kills. Brianna Wallace had 20 assists, while Marcy Greenwade had a match-high 13 digs.
