Lady Blues cruise to 3-0 win on Senior Night

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The fifth-ranked Lady Blues cruised to a 3-0 sweep of Fort Hays State on Tuesday night, Senior Night, at Lee Arena. Washburn won by scores of 25-15, 25-8, 25-17. The Lady Blues wrap up the regular season on Friday night at Emporia State at 7 p.m. A win against ESU would give Washburn at least a share of it's third MIAA Championship.

Washburn (29-2, 17-2 MIAA) jumped out a 6-2 lead early in set one and never looked back. The Tigers (7-23, 0-18 MIAA) rallied to within a pair at 9-7, but the Lady Blues closed the set on a 16-8 run.

Washburn broke a 2-all tie in set two with a 21-4 run as they bulldozed the Tigers 25-8 for a two sets to none lead. The third set was back-and-forth in the early going. The Lady Blues gained control with an 11-3 run midway through the game. Fort Hays State got back to within six, but WU was able to close out the set and the match at 25-17.

Hillary Hughes had a match-high 10 kills for the Lady Blues as she hit .529. Washburn hit .333 as a team and held the Tigers to an .035 hitting percentage.

Abby Wittman had 24 assists and seven digs, while Molly Smith had a match-high 22 digs, moving her into eighth place on the MIAA's career digs list.

Courtney Kroeger led the Tigers with seven kills, while Whitney Liggett had 19 assists and 10 digs.
