ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods fell to a shot-shooting Missouri Western team 103-82 in St. Joseph. Washburn (5-4, 2-3 MIAA) will be back in action on New Year's Eve when they will face Central Missouri at 3:30 p.m. in Lee Arena.
In the first half, the Griffons took a 55-44 halftime lead to the locker room behind a 11 of 16 performance from 3-point range while going 71 percent from the field hitting 17 of 24 shots overall. The Ichabods were 14 of 42 overall and 5 of 17 from behind the arc. The Ichabods led 15-11 at the first media timeout at 14:59 on a lay up by
Logan Stutz, but the Griffons would hit three straight 3-pointers with a fast break bucket added in to take a 22-15 lead. Washburn cut it back to five at 22-17 on another lay up by Stutz, but a 12-1 run on four 3-pointers pushed the Griffons to a 34-18 lead with 10:22 to play in the half. The Ichabods would trail by as many as 18 in the first half and would cut the lead to 11 on a 3-pointer by
Nate Daniels with 41 seconds to play. Washburn had a chance to cut the lead into single-figures before the half, but
Robert Sigala after picking up a steal, had his 3-pointer fall short and a follow by Stutz rimmed out.
After the break, the Ichabods cut the lead to 12 two times in the period, but the Griffons lead by as many as 24 at 94-70. Washburn cut the lead back to 16 at 96-80 on a 3-pointer by Reid but Washburn would get no closer the rest of the way.
Stutz led the Ichabods with 26 points on 11 of 17 shooting from the field. Washington and Reid each had 17 and Daniels had 10.
P'Allen Stinnett led the Griffons with 33 points on 9 of 10 shooting from the field and 7 of 8 from 3-point range. T.J. Johnson finished with 19 and Jonathan Phelps had 18.
The Griffons finished 16 of 27 from 3-point range and 30 of 46 from the field for the game. Washburn was held to 29 of 69 shooting and 6 of 22 from the field. Missouri Western was 27 of 32 from the free throw line hitting 84 percent while the Ichabods were 18 of 23 for 78 percent.
The game marked the first time since Feb. 5, 1997 the Ichabods gave up 100 points in a game. In that game it was a 105-75 loss to the Griffons.
