Lady Blues improve to 7-0 with 71-42 win over FHSU

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The fourth-ranked Lady Blues broke the game open at the end of the first half and ran away from Fort Hays State 71-42 on Wednesday night at Lee Arena. Washburn will travel to Truman State on Saturday for a 1 p.m. matchup of conference unbeatens.

Washburn (7-0, 3-0 MIAA) jumped out to an early seven point advantage at 13-6 with 11:59 to play in the first half. The Tigers (5-2, 2-1 MIAA) closed to within a pair at 13-11 with 8:43 to play in the half, but the Lady Blues closed the half on a 22-4 run and led 35-15 at the break.

The second half went back-and-forth until the 8:44 mark when Washburn went on a 14-0 run to open a 34-point lead at 63-29 with 5:07 to play. The Tigers got the lead back under 30 and Washburn took the 29-point win to move to 3-0 in conference play.

Stevi Schultz led Washburn with a career-high 26 points, including 17 in the first half and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. She was 7-of-9 from the field and 8-of-8 from the foul line. Cassie Lombardino had 14 points, while Megan Lassley chipped in 10.

Washburn shot 24-of-57 from the field, including 6-of-15 from three-point range. The Lady Blues were 17-of-22 from the charity stripe as well.

Kimber Weiser led Fort Hays State with 11 points as the Tigers went 17-of-55 from the field and 6-of-21 from beyond the arc.

Washburn forced the Tigers into 19 turnovers and out-rebounded FHSU 44-27.
