Setting the scene . . .
The Washburn Ichabods will travel to Joplin, Mo., on Wednesday to face Missouri Southern at 7:30 p.m. from the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. The Ichabods (13-11, 7-10 MIAA) will be aiming to avenge their worst loss of the season coming from the Lions in an 86-69 defeat in Topeka on Jan. 9. The Ichabods are coming off a 100-71 blasting of Southwest Baptist last time out in Topeka. Missouri Southern (14-9, 8-8 MIAA) dropped a 82-76 decision at Emporia State on Saturday. The Ichabods sit in an eighth-place tie in the conference standings a half-game behind Northwest Missouri for seventh. The Lions are in sixth place. The top eight teams qualify for the MIAA postseason tournament in Kansas City beginning March 5.

The Coaches. . .
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach
Bob Chipman is in his 31st season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. For 24 years now Chipman has been the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 675-275 (.716) overall and he has 431 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. Chipman is 31-18 against Missouri Southern.
Missouri Southern head coach Robert Corn has guided the Lions to 16 MIAA Postseason Tournament berths (11 straight) and two trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The 1999-00 Division II Bulletin National Coach of the Year, he holds a career record of 324-268 (.547) at Southern, and is the winningest head coach in Lions basketball history. A 1978 graduate of Southern, he has led Southern to six 20-win seasons. His 1999-2000 team went 30-3 and advanced to the NCAA-II Elite Eight semifinals. Corn is sixth on the all-time MIAA wins list and fourth among active MIAA coaches. He is a two-time MIAA Coach of the Year winner.
Last time out for the Ichabods . . .
(Feb. 13, 2010) - TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods reached the 100-point mark for the second time this season snapping a two-game losing streak to Southwest Baptist in the process in a 100-71 win over the Bearcats. The Ichabods improve to 13-11 on the season and 7-10 in the MIAA standings remaining in a tie for eighth in the conference race.
The Ichabods jumped out to a 17-6 lead in the first half and eventually would lead by as many as 29 in the first half at the 4:21 mark of the opening stanza at 45-16. SBU head coach Jeff Guiot was ejected at the 6:23 mark of the first half after receiving a flagrant technical with Washburn leading 35-14 as the Ichabods were in the middle of a 16-0 run wrapped up by the two technical free throws by William McNeill and a 3-pointer by
Nate Daniels. The Ichabods held SBU scoreless for nearly three minutes during the run.
The Ichabods were 19 of 38 in the first half hitting 5 of 15 3-point attempts and 10 of 14 attempts from the free throw line. Washburn held the Bearcats to 10 of 27 shooting for 37 percent and 1 of 10 from behind the 3-point line. The Ichabods took a 53-27 lead into the break tying the most points scored in a half by Washburn this season.
In the second half, Washburn stretched the lead to as many as 38 at 90-52 with 7:17 to go in the game before taking the 29-point win as
Todd Eils' 3-pointer with 2:14 to go put the Ichabods into triple figures for the first time since they topped Baker on Nov. 28 in a 100-60 win over the Wildcats.
Washburn put six different Ichabods in double figures including all five starters led by
Logan Stutz's 18 points. Stutz was 4 of 4 from the field and 10 of 12 from the free throw line in his first start since Dec. 5 at Northwest Missouri. McNeill and
Bryce Simons each scored 17. It was a career-high for Simons as he hit 5 of 6 3-point attempts to go along with a new carer-high six rebounds. Daniels scored 13 points off the bench with eight rebounds while
Maurice Colter scored 12 points and
De'Andre Washington scored 10 points with eight rebounds with six assists and five steals.
Ivan Croptov scored 14 points to lead SBU.
Washburn finished the game 37 of 75 from the field for a 49 percent average hitting 11 of 29 3-point attempts and 15 of 21 from the free throw line. The Bearcats were 27 of 67 from the field and 4 of 32 from 3-point range. SBU was 13 of 18 from the free throw line.
The Ichabods outran the Bearcats scoring 17 fast break points compared to two for SBU while scoring 25 points of 20 SBU turnovers. The Ichabods improved to 62-4 in games which they reached the 100-point mark.
About Missouri Southern . . .
The Lions are 14-9 this season and 8-8 in the MIAA after falling at Emporia State 82-76 last time out on Saturday. The Lions had their two-game winning streak snapped against the Hornets coming off home wins against Missouri Western and Pittsburg State. Jason Adams has led the team in scoring the last two games scoring 16 against the Gorillas and 24 in the loss at ESU. He leads the team in scoring averaging 18.1 ppg with a team-best 7.1 rebounds per game. Keane Thomann is scoring 12.0 ppg and Skyler Bowlin is putting in 11.9 ppg while Mariun Price is scoring 11.7 ppg. The Lions are averaging 83.2 ppg while allowing 72.8 ppg this season. Missouri Southern is shooting 47 percent from the field hitting 684 of 1453 attempts while going 128 of 377 from 3-point range for a 38 percent mark. The Lions are 417 of 561 from the free throw line converting 74 percent of their attempts. The Lions have won their last two games at home this season going 10-2 on the season with losses coming to Southwest Baptist on Dec. 9 and Central Missouri on Jan. 27.

(Feb. 13, 2010) Emporia, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern men's basketball team used a 14-0 run to nearly erase a 20-point second-half Emporia State lead, but the Lions couldn't finish the come back and fell 84-76 tonight at White Auditorium.
Southern (14-9, 8-8 MIAA) was led by 24 points on 8-15 shooting from Jason Adams. Adams was 5-7 from long range. Mariun Price scored 13, while Keane Thomann and Skyler Bowlin added 11 each.
Emporia (11-13, 7-10 MIAA) was led by 22 points from Lamar Wilbern. Matt Boswell scored 15 and Dustin Andrews added 11.
After trailing by 18 at the half, and 20 just two minutes into the second half, a three from Bowlin capped a 30-12 MSSU run that made the score 65-63 with 7:37 left in the game.
Another three from Bowlin with just over a minute to go cut the deficit to two (78-76), but the Hornets converted 6-6 from the free-throw line to end the game.
The Lions shot 51 percent from the field, but just 53 percent from the free-throw line, while Emporia made 21-25 of its freebies.
Series Notes with Missouri Southern . . .
Wednesday's meeting will be the 67th between these two schools in a series that dates back to 1968-69. Washburn leads the all-time series, 44-22. Washburn is 21-10 in MIAA games against the Lions and 9-8 on the road against MSSU since joining the league in 1989-90. The Ichabods have lost three in a row on the road to the Lions with their last win coming in Joplin on Jan. 21, 2006 in a 60-56 win. The two teams have met at least once a year since 1976-77. (Jan. 9, 2010) -- TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods were topped 86-69 by Missouri Southern Saturday night in Lee Arena dropping the Ichabods to 7-8, 1-7 MIAA.
Washburn jumped out to an early 6-0 on back-to-back-to-back field goals by William McNeill, but Missouri Southern (9-5, 2-5 MIAA) would used a 16-5 run over the next eight minutes to build a 28-17 lead with just over nine minutes to play in the opening half. The Ichabods trimmed the lead back to seven at 34-27 with 329 to play in the half on a 3-pointer by
Nate Daniels, but the Lions used another run, this time 11 to 5 the rest of the half to take a 45-32 lead into the break.
The Lions heated up from their 44 percent shooting in the first half to 57 percent in the second half hitting 13 of 23 shots while hitting 13 of 17 free throw attempts in the half stretching the lead to as many as 28 at the 11:48 mark leading to the 17-point win as the Ichabods would get no closer than 16 at the 1:28 mark of the half at 82-66 on a 3-pointer by
Maurice Colter.
McNeill led the Ichabods with 18 points on 8 of 13 shooting from the field while collecting two of the five steals for Washburn. Daniels scored 11 off the bench hitting 4 of 6 attempts with two three points and
De'Andre Washington scored 10 points with team-highs of six rebounds and four assists.
Patrick Hester scored 16 to lead the Lions while Jason Adams scored 14 points with 13 rebounds.
After shooting 56 percent in the first half hitting 14 of 25 attempts, the Ichabods cooled off to 13 of 33 in the second half for a 39 percent average finishing the game at 46 percent connecting on 27 of 58 attempts. The Lions were 28 of 57 for the game for a 49 percent average.
The Lions held a 37 to 34 advantage on the glass. The Ichabods also had 16 turnovers leading to 18 points off turnovers for the Lions.
