KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The No. 2 seeded Washburn Lady Blues knocked off the top-seeded Northwest Missouri State Bearcats 5-3 in the finals of the MIAA Tennis Tournament Championships at Clayview Country Club in Kansas City to win their fourth MIAA Tournament crown and their first since the 2004 season clinch the MIAA's automatic berth to the NCAA South Central Regional.
The Lady Blues started out the match by winning two of the three doubles contest with
Trang Le Nguyen and
Alyssa Castillo defeating Erika Leston and Emily Hoffman 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. At the No. 2 slot,
Morgan Rainey teammed with
Whitley Zitsch to top Lisa Pendrak and Veronica Castilla 8-4 as Washburn took the 2-1 lead into singles play.
In singles play, Le Nguyen rolled over Leston 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Zitsch's 6-3, 6-3 win over Castilla at No. 3 singles gave Washburn a 4-3 lead and the Rainey topped Pendrak 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 singles position to close out the match sending the title back to Topeka.
The win avenged a 6-3 loss to Northwest Missouri during the regular season, which was the Lady Blues only MIAA loss of the season from April 12 in Topeka. The Lady Blues also won the MIAA Tournament during the 2004, 2000 and 1991.
