Setting the Scene:
The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team will be looking for their first win of the season as they hit the road to face Nebraska-Omaha on Thursday and Missouri Western on Saturday in MIAA action. The Lady Blues are 0-2-1 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play. Last time out they tied Incarnate Word 1-1 in double overtime. The Mavericks (1-3-0, 1-1-0 MIAA) are coming off a 1-0 loss at Truman. Missouri Western (0-3-1, 0-1-1 MIAA) tied Northwest Missouri 1-1 in double overtime last time out.
About Nebraska-Omaha
Nebraska-Omaha notes: The Mavericks are 1-3-0 (1-1-0 MIAA) this season after dropping a 1-0 decision at Truman last time out. The lone win for the Mavericks came over Missouri Western 2-0 in Omaha.
About the coach: Head coach Don Klosterman enters his 12th season at the helm of the Maverick women's soccer team. He has compiled a 184-48-9 overall record as the only soccer coach in UNO history. Under the direction of Klosterman, UNO has advanced to eight-straight NCAA Tournament appearances (2002-2009). In those appearances, Klosterman guided the Mavericks to at least the quarterfinals in six straight seasons (2002-2007), and led the team to a 2005 National Championship. During his tenure, he has earned the National Coach of the Year honors two times (2002, 2005).
About the Mavericks: UNO is led by Bri Exstrom who has two of the team's four goals. Lauren Fox has played all 360 minutes in goal and has recorded a 1.25 goal against average. UNO has been outshot this season 41 to 37 including 24 to 18 in the second half.
Series history with the Mavericks: UNO leads the series 4-2-1 after the Mavericks won both meetings last season by scores of 1-0 and 4-0. The teams have one postseason meeting when the teams tied in their last meeting 2-2 in the 2006 NCAA second round playoffs, but the Mavericks advanced 3-1 on PK's to advance in the national playoffs.

Last meeting with Nebraska-Omaha: Oct. 22, 2009 - TOPEKA, Kan. -- Nebraska-Omaha's Nicole Baier scored two goals and added an assist as the Mavericks handed the Lady Blues their first home loss of the season in a 4-0 defeat in Yager Stadium.
The lone goal of the first half was by Baier who scored her 13th goal of the season after a corner kick. She controlled the ball with a couple of dribbles and pushed it past WU's
Ashley Klone at the 34:21 mark of the half. The Lady Blues outshot the Mavericks 3 to 2 in the opening 45 minutes.
Baier added her second goal and 14th of the season in the 55th minute after following up a shot attempt off a Klone save, she put the rebound into the lower left hand corner of the net to put the Mavericks up 2-0.
The Mavericks pushed the lead to 3-0 on a corner kick from Baier who headed the ball into the left side of the net recording her second goal of the season.
UNO wrapped up the scoring in the 88th minute off a corner kick from Jerica Kuncl to Nicole Cunningham for her second goal of the season stretching the lead to 4-0.
UNO outshot the Lady Blues 12 to 4 including a 10 to 1 advantage in the second half. Eleven of the 12 shots for the Mavericks were on goal.
Lauren Henry had the solo shot on goal for the Lady Blues. Henry and
Brittany Tracz each had two shots for Washburn. Klone had seven saves for the Lady Blues.
Lauren Fox had the shutout in net for the Mavericks.
About Missouri Western
Missouri Western notes: The Griffons are 0-3-1 (0-0-1 MIAA) this season after snapping a three-match losing streak to open the season with a 1-1 double overtime tie with Northwest Missouri.
About the coach: Jeff Hansen is 15-58-9 in his fifth year at MWSU. He came to Western after assisting at Central Missouri for two years. He played soccer at Missouri Southern.
About the Griffons: The Griffons have been outscored 20 to 7 this season. Audrey Henderson has two goals to lead the Missouri Western attack. In goal, Jenna Weis has a 1.63 goal against average.
Series history with the Griffons: The Lady Blues lead the all-time series 8-2-0 and have outscored the Griffons 30-4 in the eight wins. Last meeting with Missouri Western: Nov. 7, 2009 - TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team wrapped up the 2009 season on a three-match winning streak with a 1-0 win over Missouri Western. With the win, Washburn finishes the season 11-8-1 and 8-7-1 in the MIAA finishing in fourth in the conference race.
Washburn scored the only goal of night when
Angela Wiseman's free kick from 24 yards out was headed in by
Danielle Sicard headed the ball into the corner of the net for her second goal of the season at the 9:26 mark of the first half. The lone goal coupled with
Ashley Klone's fifth shutout of the year and the 13th of her career was all the offense the Lady Blues would need for the win.
Washburn outshot the Griffons 14 to 6 in the match.
Last time out for the Lady Blues:
Sept. 11, 2010 -- TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues scored their first goal of the season and had a goal waved off on an offsides call in a 1-1 double overtime tie with Incarnate Word at Yager Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half in which each team recorded three shots, the Lady Blues scored first in the second half in the 59th minute on a
Lauren Henry goal from inside the penalty box on an assist from
Leah Talley. However 104 seconds later Incarnate Word tied the score from the left corner when Sarah Layendecker scored from the left corner into the far corner of the goal knotting the score at 1-1.
In the first half,
Rachel Hansen scored on a header in the 19th minute, but the goal was waved off disallowing the goal on an offside call.
In the two overtime periods, there were two shot attempts for each team with neither going on goal for the Cardinals, as neither team was able to score in either of the extra frames.
Overall the Lady Blues were outshot by the Cardinals 12 to 9. The Cardinals were also whistled for 17 fouls compared to eight for the Lady Blues. Lady Blues goalkeeper
Ashley Klone had four saves allowing the lone second half goal.
The penalty kick in the 12th minute by SEU's Kelly Servage was part of a 6-2 shots over the Lady Blues. In the match, the Lady Blues were outshot 12 to 2 with SEU recording six in each half holding Washburn without a shot attempt in the final 45 minutes of the match. St. Edward's also held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Ashley Klone had seven saves while
Stefanie Stuever recorded the lone shot on goal.
Lauren Henry recorded the other shot attempt for Washburn.
