Lady Blues soccer team opens home slate with Lions on Thursday

Washburn to face NCAA qualifier Incarnate Word on Saturday

Setting the Scene:
The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team will have their home opener as well as their MIAA opener on the same day when they will play host to Missouri Southern on Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. in Yager Stadium. Two days later on Sept. 11, the Lady Blues will host Incarnate Word in non-conference action with a 1 p.m. start time. The Lady Blues are coming off a 1-0 loss to No. 15 St. Edward's last time out.

About Missouri Southern
Missouri Southern notes: The Lions are 0-2 this season after dropping a pair of 1-0 matches to start the year. They fell to Northeastern State on Sept. 3 and to Newman at home in double overtime.

About the coach: Former Lion goalkeeper Alese Woolard is in her first season as the Lions head coach after serving the last four as an assistant coach. She also played softball at Missouri Southern graduating from Missouri Southern in 2005 with a degree in Unified Science in Secondary Education and just finished her Master of Education in Workforce Development Education with an emphasis in adult education from Arkansas.

About the Lions: The Lions were 5-15-0 last season and 3-13 in the MIAA finishing eighth in the conference standings. They return seven starters and 13 letterwinners.

Series history with the Lions: Washburn leads the all-time series 6-4-5. Washburn has won the last four in the series by a combined score of 9-2. Overall, the Lady Blues have not lost to the Lions since Sept. 30, 2006 in a 1-0 overtime loss in Joplin. Since then the Lady Blues are 5-0-3.

Last meeting with Missouri Southern: Nov. 5, 2009 - JOPLIN, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues recorded their 10th win of the season in a 3-2 victory over Missouri Southern in Joplin.
Washburn (10-8-1, 7-7-1 MIAA) scored first just 2:49 into the match when Ashley Taylor scored her fifth goal of the season on a penalty kick. Just ninety seconds later, Tia Stovall scored her third goal of the season on a break away putting Washburn up 2-0.
The Lady Blues kept the Lions scoreless until the 37th minute when Stephanie Heines converted her penalty kick attempt cutting Washburn's lead to 2-1.
Stovall added her second goal of the match and fourth of the season from 10 yards out in the 58th minute putting Washburn up 3-1. The Lions added a goal in the 75th minute, but would get no closer.
Ashley Klone picked up the win in net with four saves.
The Lady Blues outshot the Lions 14 to 12 and attempted five corner kicks to the Lions zero attempts.
Nine of the 14 shots for the Lady Blues shots were on goal with Taylor, Markie Gallagher and Stovall each recording two attempts.

About Incarnate Word
Incarnate Word notes: The Cardinals are 1-1 this season after taking on a pair of top 25 teams to start the season falling 3-2 at No. 10-ranked Metro State and then topping No. 7 Colorado Mines 2-1 in double overtime on Sept. 5. Sarah Hernandez has scored two of the Cardinals four goals this season. Tori Puentes has a 1.85 goal against average recording 17 saves and a .810 save percentage.

About the coach: Tina Patterson is 226-80-22 in her 18th season as the Cardinals head coach. She led Incarnate Word to the NCAA second round last season after going 15-3-3.

About the Cardinals: Incarnate Word is returning eight starters and 15 letterwinners off last year's team which reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2009.

Series history with the Cardinals: Saturday's meeting will be the first between the two teams.
Last time out for the Lady Blues:
Sept. 3, 2010 - AUSTIN, Texas -- A penalty kick goal by the host squad turned out to be the difference in a 1-0 loss to No. 15-ranked St. Edward's over the Lady Blues in the first action of 2010.
The penalty kick in the 12th minute by SEU's Kelly Servage was part of a 6-2 shots over the Lady Blues. In the match, the Lady Blues were outshot 12 to 2 with SEU recording six in each half holding Washburn without a shot attempt in the final 45 minutes of the match. St. Edward's also held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Ashley Klone had seven saves while Stefanie Stuever recorded the lone shot on goal. Lauren Henry recorded the other shot attempt for Washburn.

Lady Blues Soccer History:
Washburn is 71-52-22 (.560) all-time in its eighth season of competing. In MIAA play, the Lady Blues are 48-38-17 (.537). In home matches, the Lady Blues are 34-18-9 and they are 30-29-10 on the road. In matches on neutral sites, the Lady Blues are 7-5-3. Washburn has outscored its opponents 237 to 192 in the program's history.
