Washburn tops Bearcats for 5th straight win

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods won their fifth straight game sweeping the season season with Northwest Missouri in a 71-55 win over the Bearcats in Bearcat Arena on Wednesday night. Washburn will be back in action on Saturday hosting Missouri Western on Jan. 29 in Lee Arena.

The Ichabods led 30-26 at the break after shooting 50 percent in the half hitting 11 of 22 points going 4 of 9 from 3-point range. The Ichabods were out rebounded on the glass 14 to 8 collecting only one offensive rebound. The Ichabods led by nine at 24-15 with 9:43 to play in the opening half on a 3-pointer by Jeff Reid.

The Ichabods built the lead back to seven at 39-32 prior to a Bearcat timeout with 15:21 to go in the game after Northwest's Elijah Allen tipped in a Logan Stutz miss crediting the basket to Stutz. Following a 3-pointer by De'Andre Washington with 11:12 to go in the game the Ichabod lead was stretched to 17 at 49-32 while continuing the run in the second half at 19-6.

Washburn would stretch the lead to as many as 20 with 5:54 to go in the game before the Bearcats would cut the lead to 65-55 with 2:10 to go before Reid scored six straight points to push it back to 14 and drew a charge on the Bearcats' next possession with 1:35 to go in the game.

Washington led the Ichabods with 16 points while dishing out eight assists with five rebounds. Mumpfield finished with 12 points going 3 of 4 from 3-point range and Scaife tallied a career-high 10 points on 5 of 6 shooting from the field.

Elijah Allen scored 12 points and DeShaun Cooper had 10.
Washburn finished the game shooting 56 percent including a 16 of 26 performance in the second half going 5 of 9 from 3-point range.

Both teams finished with 21 rebounds collecting identical lines of eight offensive boards and 13 defensive rebounds. Washburn had 19 assists and nine turnovers while Northwest had 12 assists and 15 turnovers.

The win over Northwest Missouri  . . .
*improved the Ichabods to 12-5 overall and 9-4 in the MIAA
*was the third straight win over the Bearcats
*was Washburn's first win in Maryville since Jan. 28, 2009 in a 71-65 win
*was the Ichabods' fifth straight win overall
*improved Washburn to 57-33 all-time against the Bearcats
*improved the Ichabods to 4-3 on the road
*improved the Ichabods to 1,398-968 all-time
*marked the Ichabods' longest winning streak since a five-game streak from Feb. 9, 2008 to Feb. 23, 2008

NCAA South Central Regional Rankings:
The Ichabods were also in the first set of NCAA South Central Regional rankings which were released today. Washburn was seventh in the rankings. The rankings were the first for the Ichabods since the 2004-05 season. The remainder of the rankings go MIssouri Southern, Central Oklahoma, Incarnate Word, West Texas A&M, Fort Hays State, Texas A&M-Commerece, Washburn, Midwestern State, Tarleton State and Cameron. The top eight teams advance to the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament.
