Lady Blues sneak by Southwest Baptist to go 5-0 in MIAA

BOLIVAR, Mo. - Hillary Hughes had a double-double and Jessica Fey led with 13 kills as the fifth-ranked Lady Blues swept Southwest Baptist, 25-21, 25-23, 25-22 Friday night in MIAA action.

Washburn (17-1, 5-0 MIAA) will continue action on the road with a 2 p.m. match at Pittsburg State Saturday.

Fey hit .350 on the night and Breanna Lewis had a .500 percentage with 10 kills and just one error in 18 attempts. Hughes had her sixth double-double of the year with 11 kills and 11 digs.

After dropping the opening set twice last week before coming back for wins, the Lady Blues were able to fight off the Bearcats early and avoid a first-set loss. Tied at 9-9 in the opener, Southwest Baptist scored six straight points to go up, 15-9. Fey responded with a kill and then SBU got another point. Kills by Mollie Lacy, Korie Thompson and then Lewis made the score 16-13, SBU. Another 3-0 run later put Washburn up, 20-19. Kills from Fey and Marissa Cox and then an SBU error clinched the set for Washburn.

Washburn hit .246 as a team with 54 kills. The Bearcats hit just .033 in the first set but hit near .300 in the final two sets to finish with a .227 percentage. They got 37 kills and led the battle above the net with nine blocks to Washburn's three.

Kelsey Lewis led Washburn with 12 digs and Abby Wittman led the team with 29 assists. Lewis added 10 for a double-double, the first of her career.

The second set was tied, 11-11 before the Lady Blues went on an 8-2 run. SBU got within two four times after that. After Washburn got to set point at 24-22, the Bearcats pulled within a point after a kill from Kylie Heim. Fey answered with a kill to clinch the set.

The third set again saw Washburn get a big run midway through, only to let the Bearcats creep closer. Washburn got to match point at 24-20 before at Heim kill and WU attack error gave the Bearcats two more points. Thompson got the match-winner to finish with four kills off the bench.

Heim led the Bearcats with 10 kills and hit .320 with five blocks. Carrie Johnson led with six blocks.
