Will McNeill enroute to an 87-66 win over Arkansas-Fort Smith in the South Central Shootout. Washburn will be back in action next weekend at the Tarleton State Classic in Stephenville, Texas, Nov. 18-19. The win was the first for the Ichabods on the season and No. 697 for head coach
Bob Chipman in his 33rd season on the Washburn bench.
The Ichabods jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the game but UAFS came back with six straight of its own to tie the score at six with 15:22 to go in the first half. The Lions would go on to build their lead up to seven at 15-8 with 11:51 to play in the half.
Washburn stretched its lead out to 13 toward the end of the first half on a fastbreak layup by McNeill as the Ichabods took a 39-26 lead into halftime.
In the second half the Ichabods would keep the Lions at arms-length not letting them get within nine points the remainder of the half as Washburn shot 52 percent in the second half while holding the Lions to 39 percent shooting leading to the 21-point win.
McNeill finished with a game-high 29 points while also recording a game-high 11 rebounds recording his second career double double. In the first half McNeill was 5 of 9 from the field while going 9 of 11 from the free throw line. Mitchell Martin had 18 points on 7 of 11 shooting from the field and
Kyle Wiggins scored 13 points off the bench going 8 of 9 from the free throw line.
Washburn committed only nine turnovers in the game after turning the ball over 19 times in its season opener against Arkansas-Monticello.
The Lions held a 47 to 40 advantage on the boards in the game shooting 31 percent from the field hitting 19 of 62 shots. Djordje Stojanovic led the Lions with 22 points.
