Lewis and Lacy big in Senior Day win

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Breanna Lewis had 18 kills and Mollie Lacy had seven blocks as No. 4 Washburn came back for a 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-16) win over Fort Hays State Tuesday night in Senior Night in Lee Arena. The Lady Blues will now go to Central Missouri Friday with a chance to take the MIAA title outright.

The Lady Blues won their 22nd straight match, 25th straight in the MIAA and 39th straight at home. They moved their record to 29-1 and 16-0 in the MIAA. Central Missouri defeated Emporia State Tuesday to improve to 15-1 in the league.

Lewis had 18 kills and hit .483 as she, Lacy, Amanda Guess, Courtney Wallman and Jennifer Yoder played their final regular season matches in Lee Arena. The five were honored for their achievements including 124 total wins and just one loss at home in their four years.

Mollie Lacy's seven blocks led Washburn's 13-block effort. Lewis had four and Marissa Cox came off the bench for five. Jessica Fey added three and had 10 kills. Hillary Hughes had 11 kills and 10 digs for her 11th double-double. Abby Wittman led Washburn with 33 assists and Guess added 13. Kelsey Lewis led the back row with 15 digs.

The Lady Blues hit .186 in the first set while the Tigers (17-14, 5-11 MIAA) had a .234 attack. They gave Washburn just its seventh set-one loss.

The Lady Blues used a 9-2 run to close out the second set and then took advantage of .051 hitting by FHSU in the third set to lead to two straight 25-21 wins for Washburn and a 2-1 lead in the match.

Washburn opened the fourth set on a 5-0 run but let the Tigers crawl within two at 11-9 after a 4-0 FHSU run. Washburn scored five straight points to go up 17-9 and later closed the match on a kill from Fey and then a Tiger error.

Sarah Hewson lead Fort Hays State with 15 kills and had a double-double with 12 digs.
