Ichabods win 1,400th game in program history in come-from-behind win at SBU

BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods rallied from a 14-point deficit to capture the program's 1,400th win in an 87-81 win over Southwest Baptist snapping a two-game losing streak winning in Bolivar for the first time since the 2004-05 season. The Ichabods (14-7, 11-6 MIAA) will return home for a Valentine's Day date with Truman at 7:30 p.m. in Lee Arena.

Washburn cut the lead to two a 53-51 on a 3-pointer by De'Andre Washington and then he would tie the score with 10:06 to go with a couple of free throws clawing back from the 14-point defecit.Washburn took a 57-56 lead with 8:33 to go on a free throw by Logan Stutz but a 3-pointer by SBU gave the Bearcats a 59-57 lead just over eight minutes to play.

The Ichabod retied the score with 7:57 to go after a pair of free throws by Washington at 59-59 and they would take the lead on a lay up by Alex North with 7:15 to go in the game. After an SBU miss, Stutz would hit a lay up of his own on an assist by Jadarren Mumpfield giving Washburn a 63-59 lead with 6:40 to go.

A 3-pointer by Mumpfield pushed the lead to six at 66-60 with 5:40 to go in the game. After SBU came up empty on its next possession, Washburn's Stutz picked up a putback off an Ichabod miss and scored going to the line putting Washburn up 69-60 with five minutes to go.

A pair of free throws by Nate Daniels capped a 14-1 run putting Washburn up 71-60. SBU cut the lead to seven at 73-66 with 3:30 to go after a drive by Tre Smith.

Tomas Brock went to the line and hit two free throws for SBU cutting the lead to five at 73-68 with 3:14 to go. After each team came up empty on their next possession. After an Ichabod timeout, Virgil Philistin scored on a driving lay up and was fouled after a Bearcat turnover. Philitin hit one free throw putting Washburn up 76-68 with 1:52 to go.

The Bearcats were fouled and hit both free throws cutting the Washburn lead to six at 76-60 with just over 90 seconds to play. Philistin was fouled and hit both free throws with 1:12 to go putting Washburn up eight at 78-70.

A 3-pointer by SBU's Smith cut the lead to five at 78-73 with 24.6 to go in the game. A dunk by Stutz put Washburn up 85-81. Stutz finished up the game with a pair of free throws locking up the 87-81 win.

The Ichabods trailed by as many as 14 in the first half at 37-23 before the Ichabods before Washburn's Mitch Allen and Bobby hit back-to-back 3-pointers cutting the lead to eight before the end of the half. In the opening 20 minutes, the Ichabods were outshot from the free throw line 18 to 8 as SBU connected on 14 compared to eight for the Ichabods. Washburn was 10 of 29 from the field while the Bearcats were 11 of 24.

Washington led the Ichabods with 22 points going 13 of 18 from the free throw line and Stutz finished with 19 and Philistin scored 11 off the bench. Lane Barlow scored 17 to lead four Bearcats in double figures.

Washburn shot a blistering 68 percent from the field in the second half hitting 15 of 22 attempts including 4 of 9 3-point attempts. The Ichabods finished the game 29 of 39 from the free throw line going 23 of 31 in the second half after attempting only eight in the first 20 minutes. Each team had 34 rebounds.

The win over Southwest Baptist ...
improved the Ichabods to 14-7 overall and 11-6 in the MIAA … was the Ichabods third straight win over the Bearcats … was the Ichabods' first win in Bolivar since a 90-80 win over the SBU on Feb. 10, 2005 …  made the Ichabosd 30-15 all-time against the Bearcats … snapped a five-game losing streak to the Bearcats in Bolivar … made the Ichabods 10-11 against the Bearcats in road games since all-time … gave the Ichabods their 1,400th program victory … improved Washburn to 1,400-970 all-time making Washburn the 10th NCAA Division II team to reach 1,400 wins.
