Beetley pushes Lady Blues to win in MIAA opener

TOPEKA, Kan. - The Lady Blues scored two late goals to break open a scoreless game as they defeated Fort Hays State 2-0 Saturday. Washburn (1-5-1, 1-0-0 MIAA) got its first win of the season and more importantly, won its MIAA opener.

Caysie Beetley had one of her four shots hit the post midway through the first half. Finally, with about 12 minutes remaining in the game she found the back of the net. Megan Buckley sent her a pass from midfield and she lofted it over FHSU goalkeeper Kelsey Grey's head for her first of the year. Buckley got her second assist.

Leah Talley gave the Lady Blues some insurance seven minutes later. She had an open shot in the box that deflected off Grey and she fired it back in for her second of the year.

Washburn edged the Tigers, 10-9 in shots and 3-1 in shots on goal. The Lady Blues took five corner kicks while FHSU took two.

The Tigers, playing their first ever MIAA game as a new program had some chances early in the second half to get get on the board first. Hailey Davey took an open pass in the left side of the box but barely got a foot on it before it went over the touch line. It went just wide of the goal and out of play. Three minutes later Davey hit the post.

Mallorie Monhollon improved to 1-2-0 with the win. She stopped FHSU's only shot on goal while working all 90 minutes.

Talley took three shots for Washburn, putting two on net. Buckey added two shots.
