Jessica Fey and
Marissa Cox came off the bench for huge performances to help lead the sixth-ranked Lady Blues to a 25-19, 26-24, 25-16 sweep over No. 24 Truman.
Washburn improved to 10-1 and 3-0 in the MIAA while the Bulldogs fell to 6-4 and 1-1. The Lady Blues will host Missouri Western Saturday at 2 p.m. in Lee Arena.
Fey had 11 kills and a block while Cox added nine kills with no errors to hit .600 on the night.
The Lady Blues were out-blocked, 8-3 with Emily Briseno getting a hand on five of them for the Bulldogs. She hit just .182, though and the Bulldogs hit just .123 as a team. Washburn had a .206 attack percentage.
Hillary Hughes had a double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs and
Mollie Lacy hit .400 with six kills and no errors.
The second set featured eight ties but Truman led just once. The Bulldogs got on the board first and held the lead until an error by Briseno made the score 6-6.
Washburn took control and was up, 20-17 before the Bulldogs went on a 3-0 run to tie it. All three points were on WU errors.
The teams stayed close the rest of the way and Washburn got to set point first at 24-23. Meghan Zimmerman got a kill for the Bulldogs to tie it but Cox and then Hughes got kills to finish the set and give WU a two-set lead.
An 11-1 run for Washburn early in the final set put the Lady Blues up, 11-3. Truman never got closer than two points away the rest of the set and a 5-1 run with the final two kills coming from Fey closed out the match.
Abby Wittman started at setter and got 19 assists while
Amanda Guess had 15 off the bench. Libero
Kelsey Lewis had nine digs.
